Thomas Lausmann was appointed Director of Music Administration at the Metropolitan Opera in 2019.  Working closely with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin he is tasked with insuring that the company achieves and maintains the highest musical standards.  From 2013 to 2019 he was Head of Music at the Wiener Staatsoper, having served as assistant conductor with the company for the previous three seasons.  Thomas is a regular pianist with the Vienna Philharmonic playing piano, celeste, harpsichord and organ in concerts in Vienna, Salzburg and on tour.  

Thomas maintains close ties with the Bayreuther and Salzburger Festspiele.  In Bayreuth he has assisted Christian Thielemann in productions of the Ring, Tristan und Isolde, Tannhäuser, and the Flying Dutchman, as well as served as Head of Music for the Ring Cycle conducted by Marek Janowski in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.  In Salzburg he assisted Franz Welser-Möst for productions of Salome and Elektra.  Previous positions include appointments as Associate Head of Music with the Komische Oper Berlin, Assistant Head of Music with the Hamburg State Opera, Head of Music and Casting Consultant at the Wolf Trap Opera, Assistant Conductor with Washington National Opera.  From 2001 to 2007 he was an Assistant Conductor with the New York City Opera.  

After his undergraduate studies in piano performance at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart, Thomas received his Master of Music degree from the Eastman School where he studied with Jean Barr.  He continued his training at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Warren Jones in the Professional Studies program.
